1. Boba is slang for boobs!

The tapioca pearls found at the bottom of bubble teas are often referred to as boba but most people don’t know where this came from. The pearls got this nickname due to their vague resemblance to big breasts.


2. Two tea shops both claim they invented bubble tea

The exact origin of bubble tea is unknown with two different Taiwanese tea houses taking credit for inventing it in the 1980s. The owner of Hanlin Tea house says he came up with the idea when he was reminded of his favourite childhood treat fenyuan or tapioca pearls. He eventually altered fenyuan into larger tapioca pearls and added them to tea. The other tea house, Chun Shui Tang, contends that their worker came up with the idea after she added tapioca to her tea at work one day in a stroke of genius and got it added to the menu.


3. The bubbles are the foam

A common misconception is that the bubble in bubble tea refers to the tapioca pearls, it actually refers to the foam that forms after the drink is shaken. Bubble tea is commonly shaken by hand or using a specialized machine before being served to the customer giving it the bubbly look!


4. Domino's & Pizza Hut sell bubble tea pizza

This unique desert pizza is topped with cheese, black tapioca pearls and other special toppings like marshmallows and honey depending on the brand. The pizza was only sold for a limited time in Taiwan at Domino's and Pizza but some local Taiwanese restaurants still sell their own versions.


5. The most expensive bubble tea costs $92!

Da Hong Pao Tapioca Milk Tea was sold for a limited time at Tapioca Land Cafe in Tokyo. The jaw-dropping price comes from the use of extremely pricey Da Hong Pao tea. Would you pay that much for bubble tea?
